Halley Suitt asks:

So the question is, do the people who are all excited about Second Life actually have a first life, or any life at all?

I’ll speak for myself and let the rest of the VTOR group chime in accordingly: my first life is doing just fine. Before SL I was spending 10-15 hours a day on/near a computer and after I’m doing about the same. My avatars might be around more, but running SL to me is like running a very advanced chat client in the background, only one can do much, much more than chatting.

One of the things I find most interesting about SL is learning a new programming language (LSL) in an online 3D environment as opposed to hanging out in a text editor or IDE. It’s more fun.

Now if Halley is bashing on people who spend time in SL, it’s never a good idea to judge people about something you’ve never tried. This is an easy trap to fall into though. I bet Halley would find something of interest to her inside SL, if she’d clear her head of preconceived notions — probably that she thinks it’s just a “game” — and give it a try.

Looking around VTOR here are just a few of many, many things one can do in SL:

  • go virtual sightseeing, take pictures and share with others
  • attend many different free events, both social and learning like watch Jello boxing or learn how to build cool, interactive 3D objects
  • find a virtual partner and get married
  • listen to and sample music
  • play games in arcades, casinos or even in someone’s house
  • go shopping
  • build your dream home or storefront
  • buy and sell land
  • buy and sell $L
  • take a rocket to space and freefall or parachute to the ground
  • fly or walk around a virtual world about the size of Boston
  • become an animal, space creature or just about anything you can imagine

Go ahead, VTOR group, keep adding to the list so we can show Halley what she’s missing.
