Machinima is defined by the Wikipedia as:

… a portmanteau word for machine cinema or machine animation … is both a collection of associated production techniques and a film genre (film created by such production techniques). As a production technique, the term concerns the rendering of computer-generated imagery (CGI) using low-end 3D engines, as opposed to high-end and complex 3D engines used by professionals.

A more simplistic way of putting it might be movies made out of 3D worlds. YouTube has a selection of Second Life videos including the recent Silver Bells and Golden Spurs. This uses special technology, not available in world to SL residents, to move the mouths of avatars to the dialog.
