Over the weekend I was working and this other Second Life resident drove by, stopped and then watched me building.

I’m so new at this that there wasn’t much in the way of artistic skill to see, but I was fascinated by how much time this spectator hung around watching. I can see how someone new to SL might find watching something being built from the ground up might be interesting. Personally, I would rather be part of the building/scripting than watching. I like watching real artists though.

From a business standpoint, I thought about a builder planning events so that folks could come watch him/her building things. Maybe even give away some $L during the event to attendees. Might be a good way to earn some extra dwell. I was able to make up a little mock pond near the entrance that I was proud of, limited building skill that I have. Picture above shows the spectator in the distance.

For my part, I’m so new to SL that when I see someone building, anything, I stop to watch to see if there’s anything I can learn. If the builder is actually making decent progress as opposed to just goofing around with prim torture or something, I find it really fascinating. The vid of Suzanne Vega’s guitar being made and some of the other vids of builds on Youtube really inspired me, but it’s nice to catch people in world conjuring up their creations. I really like the idea of builder events. Though from my experience I like to build in as lag-free an environment as possible, so I’m cautiously optimistic that such a thing would become more common.
