Would you believe I haven't seen the waiting queue message on the server yet? I keep expecting to see it, but haven't yet. So far I've only created characters on Eldinmir (spel?)

I wondered about the money thing too. I seem to be struggling making 100 silver, but then my highest character so far is level 11.

Generally, I try to stay away from web and print strategy guides (and cheats0 because they can ruin the fun of exploration (part of the fun of MMORPG to me is discovering new areas, new skills, etc, and if I've seen them first on a website or in a strategy guide it's like a movie spoiler), but that LOTRO Wiki link is definitely helpful for picking the right character based on what type of armor they can wear and weapons they can carry.

Your tips above are good without being too spoilerish, thanks JohnnyRS.
