Got it, thanks. I like the last sentence from the addendum link: <blockquote>As I wrote last time, "Second Life isn't interesting to me because of how many people go there; it's interesting because of what they do when they get there."</blockquote>

TD, I just had to revise the post a bit as I read another article which was linked on Many2many and had to ad a link to it also. Wouldn't want you to miss it, so maybe you could check the bottom of this post again?

The one thing I find discouraging about Shirky's posts is that with all the things he could criticize Second Life for he misses the mark. When he criticized the resident numbers being inflated, he didn't focus on the more important and real problem of how many people can be in a single sim before things fall apart.

Now he's lumping SL in with games? Lame.

Having played WoW the last week fairly extensively and been a resident of SL for over a year I find it very difficult for anybody to find enough similarities to compare the two. Maybe that's not what Shirky is trying to do here because his piece is too long (without reason) and weaves around the point the way too many highly educated writers tend to do.

Having said this Linden Lab has tried to use WoW as a membership measuring stick for success in the past thus fueling perspectives like Shirky seems to espouse. They also attend various game conferences and help further perpetuate the notion that Second Life is a game. I don't know if they do this to try and draw over the MMORPG crowd (big mistake if they are and would explain why people expecting SL to be like WoW would go away).

If only SL was compared against other virtual worlds like There.com or Nicktropolis.com vs. SL teen grid which debuted today there would be as you said, Harold, more apples to apples comparisons.
