There are lots of lovely places with low traffic which never get anywhere near the popular places list. I'd have thought sex kept it popular, and the name was what sold it. The real Amsterdam is one of my favorite cities in the world, and when I would miss it I would teleport over to the SL Amsterdam and get a nice reminiscent feeling. It will be missed by me, if it changes its look substantially.
