I have been making the rounds listening to many musicians, and speaking to the better ones I hear and then writing a feature on them. A friend the other day told me that was not what a critic would do; he would write a review of each performer he listened to and good or bad, give his opinion. Other wise, he said, “your credibility will be called into question.”

I am not sure how I find myself in the role of a critic, which is something I have never imagined for myself. My goal was to go and enjoy live music in Second Life. Then I thought why not write about the ones which I like to listen. I am not one that would ever want to hurt someone’s feelings, so I just thought I would make a list of the ones I enjoyed, and pass it along to you, the VTOReality reader.

I guess the only thing to actually do is to begin writing them like I see them, and tell you (my opinion) the good and the bad. I just want everyone to keep in mind that the reason there is not JUST chocolate ice cream made is because many people like other flavors. I can simply hope everyone will keep in mind my opinions are my opinions, nothing more or nothing less. I will try to bring out the relevance of each performer.
I have also decided to separate the reviews from the profile/bios/interviews, and give my opinion reviews. Separately, I will choose who I would like to write up and shine a little more light.

I will be the first to admit I haven’t seen every performer in Second Life, and am not sure I will ever get to see all of them because the numbers of performers keeps growing exponentially to the number of residents which log in to Second Life. Which makes it difficult to make statements like the best in Second Life in any live music category.

With all this in mind, I made my way to Artropolis last night and had a quick look around, but what I really went for was the to attend the Live performance of Komuso Tokugawa; touted as performing the best live boogie blues in Second Life. I can’t disagree with that statement even though I have been learning the tough lesson about referring to anyone as the best. Every time I think I have heard the best, someone else comes along and I have to rethink the matter.

Komuso Tokugawa Komuso started out by crashing very early during his show time, but isn’t that the way of Second Life? His first song was a nice jazzy blues rendition and had a smile on my face, but his Second song wiped that smile right away and left me questioning if I really wanted to be there. I am not sure what to call the work, kind of a spacey, fast, I just don’t know what to call it… I just didn’t like it at all!

Pathfinder Linden I was thinking about leaving, when I looked around, and for the first time came face to face with a Linden just out having a good time. I figured I needed to document the occasion with a picture, and was gald I was having trouble using the camera controls. As I was closing in on a picture of pathfinder Linden, Komuso Cranked up on his next song, and my whole attitude changed. From that point to the end of his performance was nothing but excellent Boogie Blues.

I can certainly recommend to any who has even the smallest interest in Boogie Blues to take the time to go to one of his performances.

As for reviewing the builds and layout of Artropolis… I think I will leave that to Caliandris Pendragon; she is much better at doing those type of reviews.

lol, I think I’m the ONLY boogie blues player in SL, so I’m not sure if being the “best” means much!

Anyways, I think anyone who promotes themselves as the “best [insert music style here] musician in [insert virtual world here] deserves to see a shrink…I understand the need for self promotion but music [and art in general] do not work like that and is basically a self delusional attitude.

hehe…I listened to the gig recording to see which one you were talking about. My version of “Someday baby” by Mississippi Fred McDowell. Actually I just morphed it into a little spacey jam, but sorry about wiping the smile off your face harold!

My live shows tend to be fairly experimental sometimes so you have to take the good with the bad;-)
Doing the experimentation keeps it fresh for both me and the listeners…doesn’t always work, but hey, C’est la vie! I actually call my style BoogieBluesNoise because of this;-)

Anyway, thanks for hanging in there, and I’m glad you enjoyed the rest of the jam..er, set!
