One man’s Opinion

I attended the performance of Bret Lock, aka Bret Allen of the Escape Records label, at Sterling Vineyards Valentine Day 2007 party. I have been told that Bret is the new country music, but in my opinion if that is the case country music will not be around much longer. His voice is so high; his singing (if that is what one wants to call it) reminds me more of when my neighbor kicked his dog, and it ran yelping across the yard.

I must admit I have a severe high frequency hearing loss, which possibly might help account for my lack of enjoyment, but several other people I talked to were also questioning how he recieved a contract with Escape Records.

I have been told he draws a big crowd, but that was not the case last night. In fact I noticed a decrease in the size of the audience once he started singing.

Personally I can not recommend his performances to anyone who is looking for entertainment in Second Life. I would have to be very desperate for something to do to even consider attending another of his high pitched wailings.

I have heard Bret several times and I have to disagree with your opinion. I thoroughly enjoy Bret he is not the run of the mill SL player, he sings some great cover songs and songs he has written. I agree he does have a high voice but that is what makes him the artist that he is in real life. I think he has the ability to draw a big crowd and he has, Valentines day is not a good day to rate people in SL when there were hundreds of things going on that night. (SL hasn’t helped artists with there new way of not being able to tp people to an event unless they are on your friends list), I would recommend Bret to anyone who wanted a night of good country and romantic must.

Evilynda, I appreciate your taking the time to disagree with me. I encourage anyone to leave a comment here to either agree or disagree! What I am trying to do is help people find entertainers which will fit their particular entertainment needs. I know everyone has different tastes and the more people who will leave their opinions here the better value these One Man’s Opinions will have.

    Harold Harold Harold…. sigh
I am telling you now, what I told you to your face.. I think your comments were a bit caustic, and rather brutal… yes.. we are all entitled to our opinions.. thats what our freedoms are all about, but how we say things when voicing our opinions could possibly be more genteel? I have to say though Harold… you have a brand of courage not found in most people, speaking out as you do *smile* Ever thought of forming a SL Amercian Idol, and you could possibly be the grumbly Simon?
I wish we had more brave souls that would give opinions on varied topics.. such as the live music in SL.

I have heard Bret many a time.. and I have never once thought of his voice as being to high. This man was signed with Escape for a reason.. and no matter what you and others may think he has talent! only other person I have ever heard say anything bad about Bret, is probably jealous cause he can’t get signed? or, has doubts in their self? no no.. i will not get into flinging hash.

I thank eveyone of the performers in SL and in the RL…. for being who they are and providing the music that fills our ears and souls.. No matter what style, what beat, what genre, or what pitch.. Talent is in the eye of each performer, and listener.. and without music of all kinds.. this world would be a very boring place

Just wanted to throw my two cents in here on this one.

    1) I am a huge fan of Bret Lock. I have his CD in my car and truly enjoy it. And the fact that he has sold as many as he has and is doing so well in RL tells me that I am not alone, and that Escape knows exactly what they are doing. And I think one thing overlooked in the review and responses thus far is his songwriting talents. “Forest for the Trees” touches a lot of people and “Brick by Brick” is strong enough to have become somewhat of an anthem to many of his fans. I will continue going to his shows in SL and will recommend him highly.

    2) SL has reached the point now of having many more musicians than a person can go listen to. And an ever increasing number of venues and venue owners looking to find musicians to play with very little time to try to make the shows here. Good or bad, music reviews will become a part of SL music. And I applaud you for having the guts to do it and put yourself in the line of fire. More reviewers are needed, because as you say, its only one man’s opinion. Perhaps these responses will help to serve that purpose. I do not agree with you on this one nor did I enjoy the way it was done….anymore than you enjoy high pitched voices. But we all have our own style do we not ? Stay honest to yours.

Cryene, I love you so; even when when we disagree. I am sure I could have been gentler in my comments, but that would not have really been me speaking my opinion.

One thing about being a “critic” (at least this is the only thing that lets me say anything negative) is I don’t have to be right. I just have to stay true to what I believe without outside comments swaying what I truly believe, and hopefully those on the receiving end of my comments can either blow them off, or possibly learn from them to become a better entertainer. (oh, I am responding to both of your comments in this one reply)

Today there are more performers and more venues than there is enough time to see them all. I just hope to take a stand and hold true to my opinions and let everyone decide how to view my opinion. I knew one movie critic I completely disagreed with every time, so if he liked it I usually stayed away and if he hated it I could almost rest assured I would love it… so I seldom missed his reviews. Even though I disagreed with him, he furnished the best guide to what I would like. Werther one agrees or disagrees I hope I can do the same for them.
