Second Life business cards from Moo

If the printing company Moo took Linden dollars it would cost around L$5,735 ($19.99 USD at Lindex exchange rate as of this writing) for 100 business cards.

Adam Reuters writes:

Moo founder and CEO Richard Moross got in touch recently to announce that the company is now creating cards specifically for Second Life users. Moo also makes cards based on Bebo and Habbo Hotel profiles.

I decided to take a picture of myself sitting in front of my TD Scripts SL store and send the snapshot to secondlife at moo.com at 6:40am PST.

At 6:42am the Moo robot responded to my Second Life email with the following message:

Hello there. This is just a quick email to let you know that we’ve just
received your first Second Life postcard. All you’ll need to do is go
to http://www.moo.com/secondlife and log in with your email address and
the the access code that we’ve given you and you’ll be able to make MOO
MiniCards featuring your images.

Email: [my Second Life email] Access Code: [8 digit code]

Alternatively you can just click here:

Don’t worry, you won’t get one of these every time that you send us a
postcard!

Thanks,

I clicked through and continued the process. First, I selected my picture. It appears that you can create a collage of pictures to create cards from, so sending more than one snapshot is possible. Second step is cropping the photo that will become the front of the business card:

Third step is customizing the contact details for the back of the business card. I decided to use my RL name and then SL name in double quotes like this: TDavid “TD Goodliffe.” I also considered TDavid / TD Goodliffe. Here is how the rest of my business card information was filled out, complete with emphasis on my name and URL:

I plan to offer all my TD Scripts SL-related scripts/services/links at that URL. Then it’s onto paying for the order. Shipping is $4.99 USD which brings the grand total to $24.98, making each card cost roughly a quarter. I confirmed the order and received the message (emphasis mine):

You’ll shortly receive an email from us confirming your order and you should get your wonderful little cards in two shakes of a lamb’s tail - otherwise known as ten business days. You can edit your order, track its progress and reorder the same cards on your MOO account page.

10 business days should put the cards in my hands by Tuesday, March 20, 2007. I’ll report back when the order is actually received.

Update 3/13/07 8:10am PST: Received the following email notification:

Hooray!

Your order is in the mail. It should arrive soon.

Thanks,

Little MOO, Print Robot

These are a blast, and quite nice to boot. They’re about half the size of a regular business card, but you can get between 4 and 5 lines of text on them, so they’re pretty handy. I will say here that the colors of your pics will appear slightly darker in ink than they do on the screen, which is relatively typical as your screenshots are backlit (plus they’re RGB, while the cards are of course CMYK, a smaller colorspace overall), thus, it sometimes helps to either lighten the pics (or up the contrast) in pshop or another photo editor before sending them in.

All in all tho, totally thrilled with the cards I’ve gotten from Moo, and I hope yours turn out to be as fun as you hoped. Cheers.
