Linden Lab axes First Land

My feature and service experience in Second Life since December 2005 has primarily been one of Linden Lab cutting off entirely or reducing one feature after another, many of them beneficial to new residents. Examples include: reducing and then eliminating the dwell incentive, reducing stipends, reducing referral bonuses, closing the Linden Answers forum, killing off the paid education training options and now we can add another one: no more “cheap” First Land for new premium account holders.

Jack Linden has the details on the official Linden Lab blog:

Effective immediately, the supply of cheap First Land parcels by Linden Lab will cease. Premium accounts will still be able to own up to 512m of land as part of their Premium membership package as they do now, the only change is that we will not be supplying the discounted parcels as we have done in the past. The website and knowledgebase will be amended to reflect this change shortly.

At least in the past — when you could find it — First Land was good to buy and then turn for a decent profit so you had some additional starting Linden dollars. I was able to buy First Land a year ago but recently when I tried to find some there was none available. Goodbye First Land, it was nice knowing you.

How long before the weekly stipends are cut off altogether? Anybody want to lay Lindens that stipends will be gone before the end of the year making having a premium account even less of a good deal for casual SL residents?

Hat tip to Adam at Second Life Reuters (check your email already, Adam :) ).
