Recently, I looked at Mindomo and have been using it to develop a mind map of different virtual worlds (MMO and MMORPG). Mindomo allows you to make up to seven private mind maps and an unlimited number of public maps for free. A pro version is coming later for a few bucks a month that will allow unlimited private maps and better security.

Our VTOR author group has been using Google Docs to collaboratively flesh out our weekly meeting agenda and Google Spreadsheet to track the monthly statistics and financial information for the site and Mindomo might come in handy as a potentially useful mind mapping tool. We’ve also been talking about a wiki for the site to be able to collaborate on ideas over the web.

VTOR readers and fellow authors interested in adding to the map above, it’s available publically here. As Harold noted earlier, Kaneva is no longer in “private beta” so that needs to be changed in the image above. We’ll chat more about it at tomorrow’s weekly meeting, which is open to the public inside Second Life. Just do a search for “vtor” in SL and stop by at 2pm PST tomorrow.

Suggested idea
One of the things our group discussed a few weeks back was that when a new resident joins Second Life there are many different paths they can take: maybe they want to find games to play, clothes to wear or change their avatar apperance, become a designer or scripter or both, start a business, check out the seedier side of SL, random exploration, attend events and more. Using a collaborative mind map we could outline these different paths and include hyperlinks that new residents could follow with additional information on each resident path here at VTOR. Over time we could build onto these paths making them more and more useful. I could even see making an inworld version that is clickable as well with notecards or objects to help with each path.

Your thoughts?

The scale of WoW is known, they just don’t like to let us know.
Number of shards x 4K, generally; though this number will shrink if more people show up in the same place or login at the same time. But that’s the number at which a shard dies. It’s possible that it is now higher, but…

    WoWcensus for more information.

I love the idea of an in-world mind map to trace routes of interest! Not only is it educationally sound, but saves a lot of time and frustration as well. Should you ever get to that point, I’d love to help with the development (would be a great way to get Newbies to focus their thoughts a little and not stand around looking so lost. Need a thread for panhandling, though…(grin) ).

This mind map looks very interesting. Can I post it to the Mappio (http://mappio.com) ? I will leave full credits to this post.
