freestylebball.jpg Freestyle Street Basketball actually kept me up for a pretty good while. Unfortunately, you can’t play this game in a screen so there isn’t sweet pictures of me making fakes and jukes…. sorry. This is has some pretty good music that keeps you interested while you play one of the few MMO street ball games out there.

It’s your typical 3-on-3 basketball game in cell shaded format, but you can increase your skillset and your attributes based on your level and how many points you win. You can also upgrade with “bills” which costs money to add to but the preview starts you out with a bit to play with and get you interested. Nothing stops you from playing more than the trial play, and you can play as much as you want it seems.

Requirements: It requires DirectX 9.0 at least which became a slight issue considering I had to boot up in a Windows platform. Yes, I know that’s where most people game in, but I do wish I didn’t have to mess with DX stuff and could just play these games on a Mac. Perhaps one day.

Positions: Typical street ball fashion, you can block a shot in mid-air, fake people out, trash talk and everything else. The usual type of positions are available in 3-on-3:

  • Guard: shooter, faster but doesn’t do well inside
  • Forward: Middle of the court, average player, better rebounder
  • Center: Slow, inside, but powerhouse rebounder and inside ball.

How to play: The keys are simple. Arrow keys to move, A for action, D for shoot/rebound/block, W for screen, and S for steal/pass.

Price: What’s interesting about this Sierra Online game is that it’s cheap. Trial play are free. The upgrade (or retail) costs $19.99 in stores and allows you more than the first couple of levels. All jerseys, accessories and such are micropayment based.

How did I find this little gem of a bball game? Go figure, from Game Informer. I won’t bore you with the details on when and where I was reading it since I’m sure you wouldn’t want the details, but needless to say, I was intrigued when they threw out “MMO” in the description. So I had to take a looksie. And boy I wasn’t disappointed.
