More on sim performance dips
I’m feeling quite cross this morning. One of my friends received a reply to his support ticket, blaming over 50 sim crashes on one avatar’s attachment, an avatar who was named in the report. Oh and LL had rolled back the sim unasked, thanks very much, losing three hours of work. Leaving aside the fact that it seems highly unlikely that even the most virulent griefer would bother to revisit the same sim 50 times for the pleasure of crashing it over the course of a weekend, and it seems particularly unlikely that someone who bought things in the sim intended to crash it, I am angry when people don’t look at the evidence before their own eyes.
Standing next to the telehub on his sim with my sim stats open, it is plain for all to see that EVERY avatar teleporting into the sim is dropping the sim physics fps. It drop s to 40-44 with one avatar and 20-30 with three or more avatars arriving simultaneously.
Unless I am to believe that there is a massive conspiracy among people to crash this one sim with griefy attachments, it seems likely that this effect is behind the sim crashes in popular sims, with the sim keeling over if too many people teleport in at the same time. Cheyenne Pallisade recently blogged about this
I have now visited other busy sims to witness the same effect. People teleporting in drop the sim physics fps and affects the time dilation too. I don’t know why, I just know that it is happening. It is obvious that the busiest sims with the most people teleporting in and out are the ones which will be most affected by this effect.
There are other weirdnesses with teleportation. For some time if you have teleported with attachments there was always the chance that they would all end up glued to your crotch, although they appeared in the right places for observers. Now it seems that teleports can remove your attachments altogether. Sim crossings are difficult unless you walk really, really slowly.
Personally, I am still of the opinion that voice is somehow causing this problem, but I don’t have any hard evidence to back that up, it is a gut feeling. What I don’t believe — what the evidence of my own eyes tells me — is that one avatar with attachments is not responsible for the problem.
