Nemesis Events
I had a little problem with my wireless connection on Saturday… so I called British Telecom to ask for some advice. As it happens, this connects you to a helpline half a world away in India nowadays. A helpful young man then deleted all my cookies and internet history for me when he took over my computer remotely. It didn’t fix the wireless - I did that by working out how to change the channel, with Oclee’s help. What it DID do was lock my out of VTOR for a few days.
Consequently I didn’t report in a timely fashion about the show and tell held in Nemesis on Tuesday at 12, hosted by Zapoteth Zaius.
For those who think of young schoolchildren when the words show and tell are mentioned, it may seem like a strange activity in SL, but I can honestly say that some of my most interesting and most enjoyable evenings have been spent at show and tells in SL.
A show and tell is a chance for people to tell others what they have been up to in SL, and to show the results. I have known people to rezz whole builds, or a single prim creation. I have been astonished, amused, amazed by the things I have seen. Sometimes someone will get up and show their first outfit, or their first build. Sometimes someone will show a work in progress and talk about what they hope to achieve for the future. Sometimes someone will astound with something fantastic that they’ve just finished and want to share.
The great thing about show and tells is how inclusive they are. If you haven’t made anything, come along and watch. Comment, ask questions… this is where the physical restrictions of SL, the inability to gather more than 30 avatars in one place, becomes a positive boon, because it’s always small and cosy and personal. Show and tells can be a great way to meet people, or to learn.
I love the fact that in SL people are so generous with their time and expertise. On Tuesday, the show and tell had been held over from Monday and wasn’t well attended, but we had a great time.
Kurston Brody showed her peaceful Grotto, which was very impressively sized, with glowing amethysts which showed best at midnight.
Filthy Fluno showed some of his art, and then spoke interestingly about how the possibilities in SL had crossed into real life for him. Sky Everett having shown him how to mirror his art on prims, he has been doing this with his prints in real life, because of the way it changes and enhances some images.
Hensonian Pennyfeather explained that she was going to show a sculpture and showed some wonderfully effective figures that she had made…three women in a circle. I was stunned by how much feeling could be conveyed in three or four prims.
Falk Bergman showed one of his newest books, which led to a little collective thinking about how wonderful it would be to have a book with Filthy’s pictures, mirrored in different ways….
All four entries were wonderful, but Filthy won first place, and declared he would be donating his prize to the Artropolis artists’s fund. Hensonian came second and planned to donate her money to a friend’s memorial to his mother’s art. Kurston Brody came third.
I have to say, I love this aspect of SL, the sharing, collective thinking, friendship and fun. The group of people who came on Tuesday shared, talked, enjoyed themselves. What more could you want?
Zap is planning to run classes every week on a Monday at 12 SLT and then a show and tell on Tuesday at the same time, on NCC. If you want more information, IM him, or look on the events list, or join the Nemesis CC event notification group.
