Nemesis and cinemas

Well, forgive me if my writing isn’t up to the usual standard, but I have had about two and a half hour’s sleep. The Premiere of the Robo Studios film “Second Life: A Documentary” was held yesterday on Nemesis at 7pm SLT - that’s 3am to me :-).

We had decided to use one cinema previously, but then Robo Studios decided to set up two streams and use one on Nemesis and another on NCC sim. I struggled to link and copy the cinema because things were behaving badly - one minute I would have an object of 98 prims, and the next I would find it had fallen to pieces in my hands and was now 98 objects of 98 prims. Meanwhile, Falk Bergman was working to ensure that the second stream was working.

Eventually I got one copied over and set it up for the evening’s showing. I don’t know if the people who visited the sim realised, but Nemesis is a working community. There are people who work there, have shops there, use Nemesis as their base and those who have homes there - a wide variety of people from people who have been in SL less than three months to those who have been in nearly three years.

I love it. I love the fact that we can all pull together to help each other when needed, and that I can call upon the people who live there to make an effort to support the others.

As I told Anders, I think the film is quite an achievement: the first full-length documentary about SL. He has learned a tremendous amount about filming and interviewing in Second Life, and is hoping to put all that knowledge to good use in shooting films for people in world in the future.

I have read a huge amount about SL in the press, as it is still hitting the papers every couple of days. Last week alone there were big feature articles in the London Times and the Independent, about Second Life. I have watched machinima adverts, read blogs and articles… but nothing has come so close in my opinion to showing the possibilities and the variety of Second Life as this film. It is something to show your husband/wife/granny/colleagues to explain what Second Life is, what it might be, and how different it is for every person in it.

I think the film gave an authentic voice to SL and SL people, and I hope that you will want to see it for yourself. The film will be available as a download from Robo Studios, and hopefully will soon be able to be paid for in world in linden dollars - more on that as soon as I know the details. In my befuddled state at 4.30 am this morning, when I logged off to go to bed, I forgot to ask Anders for the web link to the download, but I will add that as a comment to this page as soon as I can get it.

After the film, Doubledown Tandino was kind enough to DJ for the event, and did a splendid job under difficult circumstances, given that some people were still watching the film, some were asking questions, etc. Many thanks to him for a job professionally and well done.
