As of last month the MMORPG RF-Online became free to download and no subscription fees required.

RF-Online free to play, no subscriptions

via computerandvideogames.com:

“RF Online is an epic mix of traditional fantasy and futuristic sci-fi set in the deep space galaxy of Novus where three races compete in an ultimate struggle for power and resource. Celebrating the games re-launch, new players can now also experience the all-new free expansion, Episode II: Pioneers of Novus available for free to all players of the game.”

I’m a fan of sci-fi but feel like every MMORPG game I’ve played to date has come up a bit short. I held a lot of hope for Anarchy Online in the beginning which you can still download and play for free until January 15, 2008 but that didn’t hold my interest. Then I was excited about Star Wars Galaxies but that didn’t deliver the excitement of the first three Star Wars films. Now I’m most looking forward to Star Trek online hoping that doesn’t suck.

If you were looking for a science ficiton MMORPG to try out without any out of pocket expense for the software or monthly subscription fees, you might give RF-Online a try. But before getting too excited, you probably want to read the unenthusiastic comments about how bad a game RF-Online is in the CAV forums.

Download from Gaming Hell — perhaps not the best place — is taking a ridiculous amount of time to complete so I’m going to have to dispense with my review of RF-Online for this post. Instead, will throw this out to any readers who might have played RF-Online before. Is it any good or another dis-sci-fi-pointing addition to the genre?

Have to say I was very much looking forward to Star Trek MMO as well. Shame on it getting pulled, hopefully sometime in the future it will come about.
