Thanks to Jacek Lives I have learned how to stop the frustrating typing which often takes place during Live Music events. Most of us who attend these event on a regular basis try to remember to type the forward slash (/) before we start typing. By typing the / no one hears the typing sounds, but all to often there are newbies who have trouble keeping up with the amount of chat taking place have no idea they are disturbing many trying to listen to the performer.

Jacek gave a how to kill the typing sound tutorial on her blog on January 22, 2007 and I am going to pass it along to our readers.

Here’s how:

1. Enable the Client and Server debug menus with Ctrl-Alt-Shift-D.
2. Client > Debug Settings (second entry from the bottom)
3. Type or find “UISndTyping” in the drop-down menu box.
4. To get rid of the typing sound: clear the text entry box at the bottom. To use a different sound file, paste its UUID into the text entry box. (You can get a sound’s UUID by right clicking it in your inventory and choosing “Copy Asset UUID”.)

That should save the setting to your user_settings.xml file:

<!–Sound file for starting to type a chat message (uuid for sound asset)–>
<UISndTyping value=”"/>

Please remember this fix only effects what you hear, and everyone else will still hear the typing sound. Changing this setting does not free you from having to type the forward slash to silence your typing sound for all those around you.

Second Life is down right now for maintenance, so I am not able to look at everything I might be able to silence. I am hoping I can also get rid of the annoying wave sounds at beach concerts.

Jacek, I think I love you!

    to disable sound for you and for others just type // two slashes before any words. You also can still use command using slashes too, just type as usuall but after two slashes like this ///1 hide
