I’ve had this post saved for awhile and keep coming back to the thought that it would be cool if there was some way to real world tag virtual world items and locations. I know there are lots of different web-based tagging systems (and sites like SLurl.com which will bridge a link on a website to a location in world) — heck, we’ve been using a tagging system here for awhile to attempt to better describe what each posts are about — but wouldn’t it be neat if there was a way to add some type of device readable code to identify things in the virtual space? Think bar codes for the web.

Barcoding the world to point to Wikipedia entries

Semapedia is self-described as:

Create small Semapedia Tags consisting of a cell-phone readable 2D Barcode that will link others to the content you provide. Or put simply: Mark things like buildings, books, airplanes, cars or whatever with small Semapedia Tags that let others be a entry-point for more information.

Semapedia supports creating tags for multiple Wiki projects including: Wikinews, Wikibooks, Wiktionary, Wikiquote, Wikisource, Wikipedia Commons, and Wikispecies. If you could link the Wikipedia Second Life article to a physical object in the real world, what would it be? The Linden Lab office building? Or would you link the Linden Lab office building to the Linden Lab Wikipedia article?

One of the weaknesses with Semapedia is that something you find interesting and worthwhile in the virtual world may not be on Wikipedia or the other sites listed above that Semapedia supports. I realize my thinking is likely distorting what Semapedia intends to do, but perhaps there is some other service which isn’t as limited in scope?
