Vodafone a UK telecommunication company should be revealing its presence on their own island in Second Life in the next couple weeks.

Vodafone will be offering virtual handsets that enable users to contact one anothr in the virtual world and use SMS instant messaging service, with the long term goal will be to enhance other services from within Second Life.

I am not sure I understand excatly what their intention actually is… will they be bring in easier voice communications inside Second Life? I am not certain.

Harold - is the island location known yet? Any word on pricing? Link to Vodafone site?

As for the question you posed: “will they be bring in easier voice communications inside Second Life?” Don’t know the answer of course, but it’s good to hear that a third party is offering voice communication in SL because it won’t further weight down the overburdened grid. I’d be skeptical if Linden tried to do it on their network.

Of course there is always Skype now, although I’ve had problems using Skype and SL together on one of our machines. Call quality is terrible when SL is running on the machine.

I’m not too sure there could be an “easier” method. We already have Skype, teamspeak, and a plethora of other IM and voice services available.

Besides it’s one more function or service SL would not have to deal with suppoerting. It seems they already have their hands full trying to maintain the system as it is.

TD if I could have gotten the location of the island or pricing I would have linked it, although, I didn’t make a link to the Vodafone site…did I?

I don’t see any link to the vodaphone site, no, Harold. Should be added though at your earliest convenience ;)

Thanks mon :) Hey, I’m curious on something else with the post topic. Have you tried any voice communications inside Second Life? Either Skype or another client? What have your experiences been like as far as call quality?

TD, I use Skype almost everytime I am in Second Life. I have no trouble with the audio quality of Skype while running Second Life… at least no more than I have outside of having Second Life running… I usually have excellent audio with Skype regardless.
