Over 1.7 million SPORE creatures created to date, 57 days to launch

Can’t believe I’m the first VTOR author to write about SPORE. I’m late to the SPORE Creator party, having bought the Spore Creature Creator ($9.99) earlier this week as a birthday present for our creative 17 year old son (boxed at Best Buy) and then again today (digitally via EA site) for myself.

I was surprised how quick and easy it was to create a new character and share it with the rest of the Spore community a la Sporepedia. My first Spore creature (Sporian) is called Spikeopolis:

One of the neat parts of the Spore Creature Creator is being able to create a movie and uploading to YouTube. You can watch Spikeopolis posing in a fiery hellstorm below:

My son has already created two Sporians and his girlfriend created one too. In total there are over 1.7 million Sporians created to date with almost 30,000 created in the last day alone. There are 57 days until SPORE the game officially launches. Releasing a creature creator early like this is marketing genius. There will be millions of creatures to inhabit the SPORE game when it launches.

Some of the creatures being created are pornographic spawning Sporn and some are quite creative like Xbox controllers, plants, cars and more. Give an artist a blank canvas and you’re bound to see some wild creations.

If SPORE the game turns out to be more fun than creating characters, Electronic Arts and Sims creator Will Wright is going to have another huge hit on their hands. Something tells me At VTOR we’ll be watching this launch closely.
