This just in: Adam Reuters and Ziggy Figaro (Mitch Wagner in RL) are reporting that Linden Lab CEO Philip Rosedale/Philip Linden will step aside and become chairman of the board as soon as his replacement is found.

Adam’s story is here. He’s Reuters’ in-world reporter. Ziggy is blogging off Adam’s story here. The official statement is here on the official SL blog.

In the Reuters piece, Linden/Rosedale tells Adam that he’s not leaving LL or Second Life: “This is my life’s work. … I’m not going anywhere, and I’m still full-time on this, probably for the rest of my life.”

Adam and Ziggy use the change in command to project the challenges facing the new CEO, mainly keeping SL vigorous (or reinvigorating it, depending on your perspective) and taking it to the next level needed to move it from start-up to established business. Ziggy suggests that LL go the way of Google and eBay and bring in professional managers and let the lab guys do what they do best.

Check out both stories, then comment here what you think the effect will be on SL.

I believe Philip has created an amazing platform for the future, but, there certainly is a point where the business of the real world can overwhelm the potential of the virtual world.

I think simply an operations guy to streamline and normalize some of what LL does would be a HUGE step forward

I think they have the tech and vision stuff down. Its the focus and capitalizing on momentum things that seem to be slipping away. Someone to focus on those issues will trickle down to better code, and a better experience for all of us.
