Blood Frontier
After seeing a mention of Blood Frontier, and not having done a Quake-clone in a while, I decided to take a look.
Now, here’s the thing. The actual engine is based on Cube 2 (Sauerbraten), while open-source, is actually an impressive game engine for FPS. Obviously not quite up to par with today’s gaming standards that draw out every single cycle that your GPU can handle, but it’s not terrible at all. Cube 2 has actually been on my top lists of open source games for a while so it wasn’t surprising that Blood Frontier was using their engine.
One of the major conditions of the game is that while it’s a bloody mess when you start out, it does have a “blood-free” mode for kids, and paintball feature. Purely a DM/CTF type of play set without a single player mode that I could tell, but then again I didn’t run through all of the options in the beta RC1. If you have the horsepower on a Windows box, definitely worth a look if you’re looking for something to do. Personally, I’d rather throw my efforts in at TF2 if it’s a paid game and if not, then at one of those free MMOs that are online these days.
There is definitely some nostalgia when you play this FPS. At least for me, after chatting with a few buddies from back in the day in Ministry of Pain, made me want to pick up a FPS again. Just for a bit. It’s like getting out the trusty ole’ pistol and taking it apart lovingly and greasing each piece, wiping it clean, and putting it back together knowing that it’ll never fail to bring back some of those fond memories.
[Cue "Memories" song...]
