Not sure that anyone has ever done the economics of gaming, but in these darker times when money is tight, it’s good to know that you have value in your PC or consoles.

Think about it this way. If you go to the movies these days, you spend on average around fifteen to twenty dollars for two adults. That’s for at most a two hour, but usually a one and a half hour movie at full ticket price. Let’s be fair and using say a fighting game which you spend about twenty to thirty hours on at fifty dollars.

By simple math, we’re looking at a best comparison of 2.5 dollars per hour (game), versus 7.5 dollars per hour (movie).

If you even extend it out further, you can do comparisons of RPGs, replay values, versus rentals. But all-in-all, the amount of money you spend per hour of gratification obviously falls in favor of games. So break out that console, and dust off that keyboard for your PC. Perhaps it’s the tough times that will have you spend more time on these devices than ever before. We’re all looking ahead for when times aren’t so bad and we don’t have to worry about the “bang for buck” scenario. But while we’re waiting… let’s break out that
Halo Wars.
