Business location in Real Life: TD Scripts

First born into the virtual world on December 31, 2005, my original avatar appearance went something like this:

And a few months later, a friend would create a custom avatar that looked something more like my first life:

I’ve owned and operated a real life programming business since 1999 at tdscripts.com and my first virtual world business was also programming related. A virtual store also named TD Scripts that you can visit and buy a dice game I created in Second Life called the TD Dice Cube. This cube was created because a friend and other VTOR Author Lestat asked if I could make a game for his casino. I said sure and within a few hours the first version of the TD Dice Cube was created. Along the way I’ve written at VTOR about the experience of creating a product, setting up and opening my store and more.

VTOR blogging
I prefer to write more business-related topics. How can — or should — a business owner also market his products/services in virtual worlds as well as how to create new products and services? What are the challenges building a business in a virtual world versus an online business? How to deal with marketing a successful virtual business? I also like to write about and share information on other cool virtual products and services created by third parties, report on virtual events I’ve attended as well as share the monthly progress of this VTOReality.com blog including related search trends and stats. In late December 2006 we moved VTOR from an unsatisfactory free host to our own hosting and domain.

In 2006 I contributed roughly two thirds of the blog output on VTOR but anticipate this percentage will drop in 2007. Not because I’m going to write any less (will probably be more) but because I think other VTOR Authors will contribute more. 2007 is off to a great start already. Since day one our group has split the community profit for this site based on number of published posts each month as well as published the stats on the blog. This gives every VTOR Author the ability to earn the most of the money the site actually makes directly related to their effort and allows readers to see the progress of the site which makes the blog a little bit more unique. As VTOReality.com gains more readers, visits and advertising income, the authors will make more.

My personal publishing goal for VTOR in 2006 was a couple new posts a week (total posts in 2006: 169). In 2007, my VTOR publishing goals are the same, so that should give readers an idea of the amount of output they can expect from me. My personal focus here and what I’ve encouraged other VTOR Authors to strive for is quality over quantity. Write some material that will stand the test of time and be useful, helpful and/or entertaining to readers well into the future.

Writing elsewhere
If you’d like to read me covering topics other than virtual reality and worlds, I contribute to a number of other blogs including my daily updated blog Things That … Make You Go Hmm and several infrequently updated blogs like: php-scripts (PHP programming-related) and my personal Mac Mode blog (all things Apple Mac related). I also contribute to third party sites like Blogcritics.org. [10/2/07] Added my FriendFeed (currently in private beta) widget below:

Updates
I’ll continue to update this About Author page from time to time with other information about my virtual reality travels and experiences. If you made it this far, thank you for your interest and reading and please, if you like this or one of the other sites I contribute to, please tell a friend.
