Very recently Kaneva was offline for part of a couple of days for a major update. That update included adding a credit purchase system, new My Kaneva changes and functionalities, a new search and index pages on the website, and new shoes added to the virtual world.

Click any image for larger image

One of the major changes is the ability to purchase credits on Kaneva. There are several packages of credits being offered. 1,500 credits for $9.99, 3,150 credits for $19.99, 6,600 credits for $39.99, 14,000 credits for $79.99, or…

The One time only offer of 9,000 credits plus and exclusive home deed, –The Manor– the largest living space offered by Kaneva — a three story building that is 20% larger than the previous largest living space, 20 building blocks, 1 big TV, 4 exclusive lights, 5 picture frames, 1 exclusive staircase, 10 wall units, and 13 floor tiles for the reduced price of $49.99.

I went through the steps of purchasing credits by clicking on the begin purchase button which carried me to a screen to add my billing address (see image on left) –which must be the billing address on the credit card used– when I had that information filled in I clicked save and continue.

This carried me to the page (image on the right) where you will enter your credit card information and actually submit all that information for the purchase of your new Kaneva credits.

Another aspect of Kaneva that is in the process of changing is the avatars! There was a loud outcry of the Kaneva users about how their avatars did not quite match their expectations when they saved their new character. Kaneva is now stating, “As we optimize and improve the avatars and the avatar creation process, you will soon be able to re-create your avatar anytime and as many times as you like.”

Kaneva has also started allowing you to fully integrate YouTube videos into their 3D environment. Inside your media library, the YouTube videos can be managed and ordered within your Kaneva playlist. This simplifies how individuals and communities put together content into their own playlists regardless of where the video originates.

By simply placing the 3D TV’s inside the virtual world, videos from Kaneva and YouTube can play seamlessly and synchronized across all members in the same virtual space at the same time. This ensures that the community can experience the same videos at the same time to maximize social experience.

Image belongs to Kaneva-No infringement is intended

On Thursday I was supposed to have a telephone interview with Rich “Tisirin” Weil, Community Relations Director for Kaneva, but I had several conflicts come up and couldn’t participate. I had sent Rich a few questions to give him some idea on what direction I wished to take the interview, and he kindly emailed me answers to those questions along with the suggestion we have that phone interview next week. Rich I appreciate your working with me.

I had suggested to Rich, that Kaneva’s changing the economy where credits became reward credits, which could only be used for personal items (because the items bought with the reward credits can not be sold, traded, or given away) had hurt the creative innovators inside the World of Kaneva to the point where those innovators were leaving.

We absolutely want to do whatever we can to facilitate innovation, creativity and fun in Kaneva.

As we continue to develop the Kaneva service, and add new features for our members, we have had to temporarily tweak or alter some systems. The Rewards / Credits changes are a good example of that. Because we plan to sell Credits to users to enable them to buy things in the Virtual World, we needed to make sure that there weren’t any holes in that system where people could just get unlimited Credits for free (by creating multiple accounts, for example). However, we also wanted to be able to give new members some starting money. The result of those two needs was the Rewards system, — an alternative currency in Kaneva that can be used in a similar but limited way as
Credits, but also gives our members starting money and gives us the ability to safely hand out “free” money for various reasons.

The transfer of built-up homes and spaces in Kaneva is actually a different matter. We have temporarily disabled this because of some issues that came up around moderator / owner privileges that were potentially exploitable. We’re reworking that and will have a new system of owner / moderator privileges and home/hangout transfers in at a future date.

When we roll out the Credit Purchase system, then members will see fewer restrictions on items purchased with Credits (as opposed to Rewards). The Credits / Rewards system, once fully implemented, will help encourage all those things and give Kaneva and our members maximum flexibility.

What are the plans to allow user created content in Kaneva? Will in world tools be available or will users have to use outside programs? Any idea of a time frame for allowing user created content?

We’re not ready to talk about our plans in this area at this time. But, again, we recognize that our members can be very innovative and creative. We want to make sure we enable, encourage and reward that.

Now there is no control over texturing items in Kaneva…. Unable to determine the repeats, alignments of the textures etc. Will that be something for the future?

I’m not sure I understand the question here. Members can still texture items in Kaneva as they always could. Witness the Pizza Restaurant hangout, for example. It’s a marvel of texturing creativity.

O.K. Rich, let me see if I can get you to understand with a couple examples. This is a texture of Spanish Tile with one repeat per face horizontal and also one repeat per face vertically.

These faces are the same size and this is that same Spanish Tile texture — only this time it has 5 repeats per face horizontally and it also has 5 repeats per face vertically. Starting to see what I was trying to ask you?

Again this is the exact same Spanish Tile texture on the same size face, only this time I have there repeats per face set at 0.023 horizontally and 9.642 vertically with a rotation of the texture at 37 degrees. Again these faces are the same size and in the same alignment orientation to the virtual world. This thumbnails are linked to larger images.

One of the wonderful things about virtual worlds is they can become so “real” when there is a level that them mind can fill cogitative gaps during virtual immersion. The level of immersion into the 3-D environment of Kaneva seems to be lacking …. One reason is the inability to control your view … will there be attention given. to that aspect?

We are constantly working to improve all aspects of the Kaneva experience, so improving immersion and perspective are both things that are on our list. We haven’t received a lot of comments on the camera system thus far, but I’d be very interested to hear what our members had to say on the subject.

There are many complaints about not being able to create folders to hold textures, items, etc. I mean when you upload a 1000 textures to build with…. Scrolling through them all is a pain in the ass.

Your wish is granted! Our new media library upgrade allows our members to categorize all their media on their profile page, including textures/patterns, and it’s live now!

Here is a comment from one of our readers… Give me your thoughts about her comment.

I am pretty sure I am the one you are talking about in Kaneva with the Real Estate office and the Cemetery. I have actually pretty much left Second Life at a chance to be in on the beginning of what I felt like would be a good opportunity. I joined Kaneva on March 7th and now 3 months later it feels like we took 2 steps backwards.

I saw one great update and that was with them fixing the alignment problems, I dont know what it was but THANK YOU!

We still all look alike, we still have the same clothes, we were given a plant but that was taken away, then we were given a new light but that turned out to be the plant. LOL
A few small bugs were fixed but that wasnt something we could have functioned without.
The profile pages have been loading extremely slow the last few days and I noticed today that each page was loading around 200 invisible gifs…. hmmmm food for thought.

I have a very little money and it is impossible to “earn” any money in Kaneva right now….
I have people still sending request for communities to be built but without the ability to even transfer the community to them when finished, I cant even build them one for free!

Rich seems to avoid the question ReneeM asks in her quote with his response:

We have already implemented an avatar art change that gives our members more choices in differentiating their avatars. As I addressed above, we are aware of the issues around transferring Hangouts, so we’re taking a look at that system overall. We do want our members to be able to build and transfer Hangouts, as well as have a robust Owner/Moderator system.

Being as I have a little space in this post I thought I would post a few more pictures from the new Kaneva Catalog.

172.5 Meg of new download for Kaneva awaited my logging into their world this morning. It took me two tries to be able to download it all, my first try I reached just over 100 megs and had a server time out, which should have forewarned me of what was to come.

Yesterday was the day new avatars came to Kaneva!

They can actually be made to look somewhat better than these examples, by working with a few clickable arrows and a slider or two, but much diversity is still allowing user created content.

I logged into the Kaneva’s world upon completion of the download and nearly had a heart attack when I reached my apartment and found every texture I had placed had been replaced with the texture of a new Kaneva T-shirt. Thank goodness I lost server connection and had to log back in again…. and my L.S.U. Textures were back in place.

I decided to go to the mall and spend some of my reward credits on all the new men’s clothes, as I do not particularly enjoying wearing the same thing everybody around me is wearing. I teleported to the mall, which only had 58 people in it when I arrived, only to move about three steps then freeze up and after a few moments lost access to the server again.

At this point I figured I may as well check on the Kaneva web page to see if they were mentioning anything going on with the servers. Couldn’t find out anything about the wold servers, but found this shopping catalog page, where there were listed samples of the new women’s clothing.

They also have pictured in the shopping catalog pictures of the empty apartments so you might get a very limited idea on what you are wanting to buy for an apartment…. hardly anyone would want the closet they start you off in.

I wanted to go back to the mall and buy some clothes, and I tried again. I was heading for a clothing store when I noticed there was a Kaneva Bank over in one of the corners of the center of the mall. I went to see how much Kaneva Credits were going to cost, but found it was a depository for items you didn’t want to carry around with you, rather than a place to exchange dollars for credits and visa-versa.

I turned and headed for the clothing store and again loss the server. When I tried to get back into Kaneva I received an error message…. basically showing me the servers were down.

I can only assume that the good folks at Kaneva are pulling their hair out about now… trying to work out their “bugs”. I will make an attempt here in a little while to go back into Kaneva and see what has changed, and try to buy some clothes with these worthless reward credits I have.

I had been trying for days to reach someone in the offices of Kaneva, leaving messages in various voice mails with contact information…. without success. I finally got intouch Chris Klaus’s personal assistant and very late last Tuesday recieved a call from Rich “Tisirin” Weil, Community Relations Director at Kaneva.

Rich explained things are very busy there in Atlanta, with them preparing to change to larger offices, and trying to roll out the new avatars, clothing and graphics. Which I thought he said would be done before last Thursday, but either I misunderstood or they ran into more trouble than they thought they would. “Tisirin” told me he would be happy to answer a few questions, but suggested that I wait until after the new things were placed in world…. which I agreed to do.

Tonight I went into Kaneva and saw the announcement that the new avatars and clothes would be released in world Tuesday June 19.

After seeing the picture above I am not getting the warm and fuzzies over these new avatars, but I guess they will be better than the avatars given by Second Life before we purchase new skin and hair etc….

The signs stating Stress Tests will be taking place 3 days a week are still in place, so at this time it appears that people will still be able to “earn” reward credits.

More and more friends have been talking about the lack of things to do and accomplish in Kaneva and wondering just what opportunities will become available to them once Kaneva comes out of beta. Of course most of those contacts have been complaints, and I have passed these along with a few others to Rich Weil and received an email telling me that he was working on getting the answers from the proper people more in the know than himself. We are going to try to get together Wednesday or Thursday on the phone to discuss these and other Kaneva matters.

3D immersion not possible… lack of control of your viewer… gaps to wide for the subconscious to fill to feel a sense of virtual being real.

about new features being announced as coming soon, and no one knowing what the heck soon means.

the change of the economy where all your credits were converted into reward credits… which can be used to purchase things, but those things can not be sold or given away.

not know if purchases with “bought” credits can be sold or given away

lack of ability to create

lack of control over texturing

lack of folders to organize pictures, textures etc.

The inability to receive responses from Kaneva staff

Kaneva, up to this point has been a major disappointment, but I am still holding out hope that another virtual world can become responsive to user’s needs.

Keneva’s New Forum

Keneva has happily announced the opening of new and improved Official Kaneva Forum, but actually getting keneva responses are still few and far between and spam has sat on the forum for days.

I did find this on the Forum and since I can not find the TOS any longer (serves up an error message) I thought I would publish this here.

The Public Relation Associate of Media Village, Liz Statenstein, mailed me a copy of VIRTUAL WORLDS: Rewiring Your Emotional Future after I offered to review the book. This is that review.

As soon as I opened the cover of Virtual Worlds I was relieved to find that my tired old eyes would not be suffering from eye strain. The text is large enough without being to large to allow ease of reading… Thank You Media Village!

I was sucked into this book from the first paragraph of this easy to read in a day book.

Virtual Worlds are 21st Century versions of 1960s mind-expanding drugs, but they are expanding more than just the mind. Virtual worlds and enhanced social networks allow us to explore new universes, expand our emotional range and depth, change the nature of communication and create different identities for ourselves. You can now create multiple versions of yourself with different names, gender, ethnic heritage, passions, dreams, and even relationships.

Although my online personality in virtual worlds reflects my real life self… meet me in Second Life and Real Life… pretty much only the physical representation is different to picture me as I wish I were physically. Jack Myers statements that people are able to recreate multiple versions of themselves and test out what they would really like to be; allows the use of multiple emotional perceptions of ourself to help learn about what alternate selves can become. These emotional perception changes rings a loud tone of truth to me.

I am particularly interested in how, as Myers points out, the intellect has been given control to over come most all emotions. We hear often people talking about emotions of the gut (something is wrong… I feel it in my gut) or heart, (I feel like my heart is breaking) but almost alway, these emotions can only be allowed with approval of the brain.

VIRTUAL WORLDS makes the bold statement:

The brain has, in essence, captured dictatorial powers over emotional — and physical –well-being. As new generations learn in Virtual Worlds how to empower emotional centers to gain power and control equal to the brain, the natural evolutionary process will ultimately lead to a re-balancing of the human psyche, spirit and ego.

These virtual worlds and social networks are allowing people to experience new emotional depths and ranges, and as these emotions gain use, will they change the very essence of how we view ourselves and how we communicate?

To a degree, Myers discusses the expansions of virtual worlds and how there must be marketing changes to keep up with the potential of these virtual worlds, how and why virtual worlds are real to the user, and how wireless is the next frontier.

The last chapter of the book is the first chapter of a new virtual world reader generated fiction; which sets the opening ground work for the direction of the new book. The readers of this book are <strike>invited</strike> encouraged to allow themselves to be totally immersed in this virtual world, and send in your <strike>ideas, thoughts,</strike> chapter. Once the chapter is chosen it will be published and then be opened to the readers to write the next chapter… until the book is complete.

Each accepted contribution and its author will “authorize Myers Publishing LLC all reprint and publication rights in all media with no restrictions. If your chapter is selected as the official Chapter 2 for CyberParadiseSociety.com, you will be granted a non-negotiable share of all subsequent revenues generated by the book (upon completion) and properties developed from the book.”

I enjoyed this book which gently fed me more than one idea to ponder. It is an easy read which can open thought processes in your mind you may have not considered. I rate this book at 4 stars out of a possible 5 stars. I feel it is written for the parents or friends of people that are actively involved in a virtual world more so than for the person involved.

If your friends or parents don’t understand how or why you are so involved in a virtual world, you may want to consider buying them a copy of this book which might, just might, add a little glow to that light bulb above their head.

First lets discuss the term coming weeks; way back in March (I think) then again in April Kaneva begin promising: “we’re just weeks away from introducing a new generation of avatars to the World. That’s right, you’ll get the chance to create the new 3D you, with more choices than ever before. More body types, skin tones and hair styles. And yes, we’ll unveil a new clothes line to make sure your new persona is fashionably clothed for every occasion.” Now here it is June and we are still “just” weeks away from this long promised event.

When this long promised event takes place… all of the clothes we have for our present avatars will no longer fit… So Kaneva’s plan is to simply delete them and give the new avatar a t shirt, a pair of jeans, and a pair of shoes.

What has Kaneva actually done for its users? On May 1, 2007 Kaneva changed its in world economy. They changed any credits one had up to that point acquired into Reward Credits…. and actually just a small percentage of what an avatar acquired, were they allowed to keep, and those became non transferable…. along with anything you happen to buy with them. Plus all of your Inventory items also became non transferable, But, Remember, you’ll soon have the ability to buy Credits online, enabling you to enhance and personalize your Virtual World experience even more.

One of the problems Kaneva ran into was that they weren’t prepared for the creative thinking of their users. One user became very good at building and decorating clubs, venues etc. Many were asking how she did it, and she offered to “sale” them a club. This went over pretty good with the users, so she opened a real estate office and went about designing clubs and putting them up for sale. Probably the first actual user business in Kaneva… The new rules put a stop to that.

She also started a “graveyard” featuring both heaven and hell where people could set a head stone in either place with a headstone in hell costing the most. This way when someone steps all over your heart; you can have them burn in hell forever! Well since Reward credits can’t be used to pay for that either…. another business bites the dust.

Over all Kaneva does not seem to be trying to become business friendly at all. Heck, Kaneva is not user friendly really.

If you want to texture things in Kaneva you have to upload an image to do the texturing, but you can not have folders to store pictures in…. so you have to scroll through hundreds or thousands of pictures looking for the one you wish to use.

Come on Kaneva, how much trouble would it really be to add the folders to allow users to organize their materials? Which would allow them to scroll through folders to find the one they are looking for.

Kaneva is in the beta testing stage, one shouldn’t expect too much from a beta program, but they are treating their beta testers like third class citizens. Like the people that are regularly using Kaneva should receive some type of reward or pay for helping Kaneva understand and correct its many problems.

I can understand wanting the beta funds separate from the non beta funds, but you have many people frustrated and standing around with nothing to do… because money is to hard to come by. I know many of these people and they were active before you made reward credits and the things bought with them non transferable.

Kaneva, it appears to me you are shooting yourself in the foot! Show your beta testers they have a real value… Have you realized yet that even the kids signing up and spending a very short period in Kaneva are saying screw this! And you don’t see them again?

PUT SOME VALUE ON YOUR BETA TESTERS!

The opinions expressed in this post are the opinions of the author, not necessarily the opinions of VTOR-Virtual to Reality Blog.

Yesterday in the post Court Ruling & Should We? I wrote:

“Cyberspace” what is it? What should it be?

“Cyberspace” is not inside your computer, nor the computer of people you are interacting with. Is it really inside a server somewhere in between? Or is that server simply a device which allows us to enter into “Cyberspace” as would be some space ship which would allow our us to reach distant solar system?

“Cyberspace” is a truly a place, some say it is not exactly real (which can be neither proved nor disproved) that is really a destination. As much a destination as an alternative dimension, or another planet in outer space. This place is an earnest and serious place where millions of us enter and leave it everyday.

Some give “Cyberspace” considerable thought, write about it, negotiate over international implications, or regulate it. regulate it… regulate it… regulate it… regulate it… regulate it… regulate it…

Should “Cyberspace” be regulated by any government body? Would they also regulate inhabitants of some distant planet revolving around some distant star? Maybe the question should be … Would we put up with government’s from some inhabited planet to regulate Earth?

How much right do we as a community of humans really have trying to <strike>control</strike> <strike>regulate</strike> force our ideas onto any alternate universe, dimension, country, or state?

click me for larger picture,

Today, thanks to fellow author TD Goodliffe’s post “Daniel Linden’s haunting words about SL at Standford Humanities Lab” pointing to the Washington Post article Does Virtual Reality need a Sheriff?, I find a quote by Philip Rosedale:

In the ideal case, the people who are in Second Life should think of themselves as citizens of this new place and not citizens of their countries.

“Rosedale said he hopes participants in Second Life eventually develop their own virtual legal code and justice system” stated the Washington Post.

These quotes leave me believing that Rosedale, Kapor, and I aren’t to far off on the basic idea of virtual laws. I have no idea how Jeff Bezos (founder of Amazon), Pierre Omidyar (founder of Ebay) think along these lines of “freedom” in cyberspace, but I know for a fact that I am a “Libertarian.”

To me “Libertarian” means, in its fundamental form, I believe each person should have the right to do anything they want to do; as long as doing so does not interfere with anyone else’s rights. (I know this is over simplistic on the surface) Yes, I know that the uproar right now is over “age play,” but I also realize that once any form of “rights” is given up… it never seems to stop. Today it is “age play” tomorrow it could be something in which you or I participate.

The thing about true freedom is: if you want it, you have to fight for things you may not personally believe, but might set standards which will lead to the removal of rights you do believe in. Again the string which connects rights are tied together, and once one falls — another is tugged upon putting it in peril.

Rosedale’s statement, “I hope participants in Second Life eventually develop their own virtual legal code and justice system,” needs careful consideration and thought before being acted upon. Yet, shouldn’t an alternate world have the right to govern itself?

Resident’s of Second Life are residents of an alternate world, and are citizens from around the globe. No country’s governments should be able to set its own form of standards upon a global community. That should be left to the global community!

Could and should an “Avatar Bill of Rights” and a “Constitution” be established for cyberspace?

I hope some of you noticed I have been missing from the pages of VtoReality over the last couple months. I guess one could say I took a vacation, well it wasn’t a vacation, lets just say I was missing from the action.

I am so far behind on what is going on in both Second Life and Kaneva that I really do not know what has been covered and what hasn’t been blogged about in the many blogs about these worlds. I will try to search the post here on VTOR to make certain I do not repeat the same type post of the other authors here, and if I do so… I sure hop I do it from a different angle.

There are two people I owe an apology as I had told them I was going to write an article about their music and haven’t done so up to this point. One of them is the fantastic Kelvinblue oh, a fabulous blues performer, and the other is Flaming Moe, a brilliant Sax player. Guys I will have both of these articles done in the next 48 hours. Flaming Moe’s will be an interview and Kelvin’s will be a one man’s opinion and hopefully followed later with an interview…. he has some exciting things happening to him.

Now, I expect to have a flurry of articles over the next couple weeks, then settle down to a more relaxed pace.

I have spent a few hours in Second Life over the last week, visited a few places I want to tell you about, and listened to several performers I will write “one man’s opinion”.

I also will hope to catch up with what has been going on, and maybe give my take on some of them.

I am asking any of you readers that have anything you would like me to check into, or suggestion of people or places to visit… Leave a comment with your request, and I will try to do what I can.

For those of you who missed me, I am Back … for those who haven’t read any of my works, I hope to entertain and inform you. For you new people to Second Life, if there is anything you need help with…. Leave a comment tell me what it is and I will try to write a tutorial on it.

I know I have been absent from the VTOR Blog for most of the last month. I have been exploring and attempting to build in the World of Kaneva. What I think I have really been doing is trying to find something good to say about Kaneva, but am finding that a hard accomplishment to achieve.

My Kaneva apartment Could you guess I am an LSU Fan?

I full well understand Kaneva is in beta testing and trying to get all the bugs worked out, but when Kaneva went open beta should have said that most of the bugs have been worked out and people can began socializing and having a good time inside their world…. but that is just not the case. I have been able to crash Kaneva several times to the point it takes kaneva’s browser about 5 minutes or longer to scan my system and build up a report to send into the developers, and after putting together the report it will take another minute to 3 minutes to pass all that data to them… and yes I have a rather high speed connection. Each time I have managed to crash kaneva I have signed my reports and given a contact email address where they might contact me back… has that ever happened….. nooooo!

They claim they wanted people that could break the game and furnish complete reports about what they were doing when the break down occurred… you would at least think they would take the courtesy to respond to the extra effort I put into trying to furnish as much information, which lead to the event causing the crash, as I could possibly include.

Renee and Me

Don’t take all the negative I am going to throw out in this article to far into the negative circle… In fact I guess I should tell you now about when my best friend Renee and I ran across this little place about 4 years ago that we thought might have a bit of promise and went to see just what was available in this place called Second Life… Both She and I were already webmasters, myself a true beginner and she a well experienced money maker from the web and attempting to mentor a hard headed beginner… anyway we went into this place called… hell I am not even sure it was called Second Life yet, It was still so new that what few people we saw looked so bad we laughed our butts off at how cartoonish they looked, and there was not very much content in the world at all. Still we looked around and laughed and decided that in time this could be something worth watching… we were intrigued enough to look around for an affiliate program which we were going to join and send traffic that direction, but their affiliate link didn’t work…. so we blew it off.

She and I both greatly regret letting that little event pass us by as the world expanded into Second Life, and grew up without us. I finally joined in Second Life a little over a year ago and begged Renee to come on into it with me then. She waited a year to finally come in and was so piss off at me for not nagging her to come in much sooner.

Now here comes Kanvea and I slide right over there and start trying to get invited into the closed beta test and of course I want my best friend to not be able to say I left her in the dark, so I called Renee and told her about kaneva… well we both remember that we had made a rather large mistake by not getting into Second life in its early days, so we are both over in kaneva now trying to be on the cutting edge of what we both think to be a good idea. But will it really be anything close to what Second Life is?

The avatars are so ugly they are almost scary…. but the first time I went into Second Life that was the case there also.

I like the fact that kaneva wants the learning curve not to be so steep that so many new people are overwhelmed and leave the “game” before even getting an idea of what can be accomplished, but ones ability to build is so limited at this time it is frustrating, and that is only the beginning of Kaneva’s problems.

Kaneva wants to create an environment in which both adults and young people can have fun, which is noble, but failing miserably at this time. There is a reason adults often want to be able to get away from kids to enjoy their recreational time and vice-versa. The maturity levels are simply to far apart in most cases. In Kaneva you can not get away from “annoying immature individuals” (poor substitute for the adjectives and noun I wanted to use) even in your own apartment.

The biggest boondoggle Kaneva is committing, in my opinion, is a serious lack of communication with the users of Kaneva. Emails go unanswered, announcements go unfulfilled, forums ignored, and user created content…. well that is a whole new post!
