We have migrated the VTOR RSS feed from Feedburner to Google. Some bloggers are reporting this is compulsory and receiving emails to that effect, but we haven’t received any notification of this yet. Here’s the new URL:

http://feedproxy.google.com/Vtor-VirtualToReality

This remains a full text RSS feed, although when you look at it directly from the browser it is only showing partial feed. If you look at the source code you’ll see it’s a full text feed meaning that everything you see in this post with some mild exceptions like iframes and script embeds you’ll see in the RSS feed.

For 30 days the older Feedburner feed will redirect, but you might want to update now. Another change we’re doing which you will notice is Google Adsense ads now appearing in the RSS feed.

We are only doing this experimentally for 60 days and then our group will review the stats to see if this is worth continuing.

In December these ads will appear below the title and post body (see example above) and in January 2009 they’ll be moved above the post content and below the title.

It’s this author’s opinion that it’s not worth doing but since we’ve never tried this in the VTOR RSS feed we don’t know for certain. You are welcome to use the comments below to share your comments on how you feel about this experiment.

New! How to tip VTOR authors
We’ve added the ability for readers to leave a tip for VTOR authors for those so inclined. All tips are split like we do the advertising and are based on an author’s activity for the month. You can tip as little as a nickle or as much as you want using the service tipjoy. You’ll find the tip form along the left sidebar on the homepage under the subscribe to VTOR links. The form is also enclosed below.

At our next group meeing, the VTOR authors will be encouraged to add direct tipjoy links to their individual about pages so if you have a favorite VTOR author you could tip that author directly.

Dipity helps you create, edit, maintain and share timelines. You can work on a timeline as a group or by yourself. The person who creates the timeline has the ability to allow others to work on the timeline. I did a search for Virtual Reality and came up with a YouTube timeline as an example. The following was created by the bot “Time T”:

The first YouTube video shared to the service tagged ‘virtual reality’ was on November 14, 2005 by YouTube user menace:

You can have Time T generate TubeLine timelines from YouTube using the TubeLine online generator. I tried another dipity timeline search for ‘3D’ and this time chose a human generated timeline: the history of 3D hardware + software:

Interesting seeing Sillicon Graphics founded in 1982 and 3Dlabs in 1983. Who came first, ATI or nVidia? ATI in 1985, some 8 years before nVidia.

I decided to start working on a VTOR timeline. A resource that would track significant posts/events made to this site along with post number. I don’t think it should include every post, only posts where some notable event has happened to one of the VTOR authors who has shared it in a post and/or among the first time something has been discussed at VTOR.

This is a work in progress and I invite other readers and VTOR authors to help out if they want. Here’s what I have so far, which only takes into account the first 25 posts at VTOR:

As of this writing, this only takes into account the first 25 posts at VTOR back in 2006 when this blog was still hosted at Blogcharm. I added that Blogcharm.com ceased operations on January 1, 2008 as well. It needs to have topics added and there are like 5 or 6 more VTOR author first posts to add. What you see took a good hour or more to put together.

It’s kind of cool keeping track of our first experiences in virtual worlds / MMO as reported here at VTOR. Not sure how or if many others will find this interesting, but I did. Note to VTOR Authors: we’ll discuss this timeline at our next full meeting (the Friday after this one).

Happy timeline creation to you!

Uh oh, this morning it came to our attention that code from a third part stats tracking service we use at this blog called Site Meter was preventing people using the Internet Explorer 7 browser from displaying any pages at this site.

I just shared the details of the Site Meter problem at MakeYouGoHmm, but wanted to apologize to the 43% of VTOR readers according to Site Meter who couldn’t access these pages for as long as this issue has been happening. A day, two, don’t know exactly.

The Site Meter tracking code has been fixed via excellent suggestions from Luboš Motl from all pages and the cache cleared here at VTOReality.com.

If for some reason you are still experiencing the “operation aborted” error, then please clear your browser cache or try visiting a different page at VTOR. I tested in IE7 and am no longer seeing the problem after the code fix.

FriendFeed comments and ‘like’ added
On a much more positive note, yesterday support was added to every post here at VTOR for FriendFeed commenting. If you enjoy one or more posts at VTOR you can directly comment on it using your FriendFeed account without having to visit FriendFeed. We think it’s kind of handy. In fact, a friend on FriendFeed was the first to tip me off to the Site Meter tracking code issue.

If you need to know what your FriendFeed API key is that’s mentioned in the comment form just visit:

http://friendfeed.com/remotekey

Now let’s get back to virtual worlds, gaming and the like. Enough of this site maintenance BS.

It was a record setting traffic month in July 2008 here at VTOReality.com, with an increase in unique visitors of 27% over June 2008. Thank you for reading and subscribing.

We split the revenue earned from this blog based on the number of posts/activity from the various VTOR authors and all monies this month have been paid in $USD. The following are the figures compiled for July 2008.

Based on a total of 39 posts and after site expenses the VTOR blog earned in July 2008: $33.75 USD. Our group elected to put Linden$500 or 5%, whichever is greater each month into a promotional fund which equals this month’s contribution: L$500 and a total promotional balance of: Linden$6,682. This left a balance to be split among those who posted in the group of: $31.88 USD as shown below.

# of posts – VTOR Author
